Abstract


The Effect of Traditional Approach and Direct Teaching Model on the Cognitive Process of High School Students

The purpose distributions descriptive statistics the traditional Approach and Direct Teaching Model on the Cognitive Processes of the students studying in high school. The research group which is made up of a total of 80 students who are students at Kadıköy Fenerbahçe Anatolia High School consists of 20 male and 20 female in the experiment group and 21 male and 19 female in the control group. This study was conducted using activities prepared according to the 9-week Direct Teaching Model, and an experimental pattern with pre-test and post-test control groups was used in the research. Meta-cognitive learning strategies scale developed by Namlu (2004) has been used in order to reach the aim of the study. In the analysis and interpretation of the data, firstly, normality distributions were made according to the Kolmogorov Smirnov test and Shapiro-Wilk test, as well as Skewness and Kurtosis values and because p>0.05 and standard error values are between -1,961,96; we can say that the data is distributed normally. Accordingly, paired samples test, Independent Samples t, Descriptive Statistics Test and frequency analysis were used for related samples. In order to measure the effect values Cohen's d was applied and the criteria suggested by Cohen were used. These criteria are; 0.01 is small impact, 0.06 is medium impact, 0.14 is large impact. Based distributions descriptive statistics; physical activities, the application of the direct teaching model in the lessons and the students' being active in the lesson provided positive results on the cognitive processes. A meaningful difference was found between the pretests and posttests of the experimental group students. All these results supported the idea that the direct teaching model would benefit in developing cognitive processes.
