Abstract

A Study on Investigation of Secondary School Students' Academic Self-efficacy Beliefs According to Gender, Grade Level and Success Level in Mathematics Course

This research was conducted to examine the secondary school students' academic self-efficacy beliefs according to some variables. For this, the data of the research was collected using a four-point Likert type scale used in similar studies and a personal information form developed by the researcher. The study was conducted in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 school year, with a total of 358 students, 181 girls and 177 boys, studying in nine different secondary schools in Tatvan district, Bitlis province. Independent sample t-test and Anova were used for analysis of the collected data. Pearson correlation analysis was also conducted to determine the relationship between academic self-efficacy belief and math achievement. According to the results of the analysis, it was determined that the academic self-efficacy beliefs of the students correspond to the level of “ highly agree” for the overall scale, ability and Environment sub-factors, but “fully agree” with respect to the quality sub-factor of the education. It was determined that the students ' academic self-efficacy beliefs were not significantly differentiated by gender, but significantly differentiated in favor of female students in terms of the ambient sub-factor of the scale. It was concluded that students ' academic self-efficacy beliefs differed significantly according to grade level, but the scale did not differ significantly in terms of ambient sub-factor. It was also found that the students ' academic self-efficacy beliefs differ significantly according to the level of achievement in mathematics, and that there is a moderate, positive relationship between self-efficacy beliefs and math achievement.
