Abstract


Preservice Teachers’ Views About the Use of 2D Barcodes on Teaching Materials

The advancements in communications technologies today have affected educational processes as they do all areas of social life. The widespread use of small and portable devices providing the access to the internet; thus, the widespread use of the internet, have enabled the use of 2D barcode, a Web 2.0 tool, practices in education. From this perspective, it is of critical importance to determine preservice teachers’ views about the use of 2D barcodes in education. This study aimed to explore preservice teachers’ views about the use of 2D barcodes on teaching materials. The study was designed as a case study, a qualitative research model. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. The participants of the study were seven preservice teachers who were selected using the homogeneous sampling technique. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. To present data in an unambiguous way, the data were transformed into a numerical form and presented in frequency tables. Also, excerpts of the preservice teachers’expressions were included. The results revealed that the preservice teachers have some positive views on the use of 2D barcodes on teaching materials like facilitating access to the information and contributed to faster and more effective and permanent learning of the topics. Nonetheless, they further underlined some limitations of the use of 2D barcodes such as compulsory internet connection and the need for technological devices with suitable features. Furthermore, many suggestions on the use of 2D barcodes were presented in the study.
