Abstract


The Effect of Teaching Astronomy with Models on Students’ Achievements and Attitudes

In this study, it was aimed to study the effect of teaching astronomy concepts in the ‘Solar System and Beyond’ unit which was included in the science curriculum with the help of hands-on models on students’ achievements on astronomy and on their attitudes towards astronomy. Six different “hands-on” models have been developed in this direction. The sample of the research constitutes a total of 80 middle school 7th grade students who are studying in one of the state schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Samsun province. The study has a semi-experimental structure among the real test models and a pre-, post-test control group model was used. The data of the study were obtained using Astronomy Achievement Test and Astronomy Attitude Test. The data were collected three times; before instructions, after instructions and long time after instructions (permanence). For data analysis, mixed design ANOVA technique was used for repeated measurements. As a result of the analyzes, it has been determined that "hands-on" modeling is an effective way of teaching astronomy concepts. It has been also found that the current science curriculum is sufficient on teaching astronomy concepts, and learning is limited and not permanent. While it has been found that teaching with "hands-on" methods is effective in eliminating many alternative concepts, it is also seen that the current Science curriculum is not effective. Thus, it has been suggested to use "hands-on" models in astronomy education and to popularize the production of these models. It has also been suggested to use methods that eliminate the alternative concepts students have.
